Mobile Filmmaking: Accessible to Everyone

Since 2014, I’ve been creating films as a solo filmmaker. Back then, I relied on a DSLR to bring my stories to life. However, times have changed, and today, you can use your smartphone to start your filmmaking journey. Whether you have an iPhone or an Android device, you can get started with what you already have.

If you’re just beginning, watch the video above to learn about the most crucial filmmaking gear for smartphone users. While the process isn’t overly complicated, there are key elements that could slow you down if not addressed early on.

Is an iPhone Suitable for Filmmaking?

Absolutely! Any camera or phone you have is perfect for filmmaking. Remember, the best camera is the one you have with you. Many aspiring filmmakers delay starting because they’re waiting for the "perfect" camera. Does that sound familiar?

There’s no need to wait! Begin with what you have and expand your gear as you grow.

If you’re considering upgrading your smartphone, the new iPhone 13 Pro is a fantastic choice, especially if you’re financing it through your carrier. iPhones are renowned for their top-notch video quality, and the iPhone 13 Pro comes with three built-in lenses, making it easier to capture diverse shots. Even the regular iPhone 13, which has dual lenses, offers great versatility.

Moreover, iPhone’s color science has continually improved, making it an excellent option for anyone looking to produce visually stunning content with their smartphone.

How to Film Cinematically with an iPhone

To create cinematic videos, focus on the sequence of shots. Start with a wide shot to establish the scene, then move to medium shots and close-ups. For critical details, consider using extreme close-ups. Planning your shots in advance with a shot list can ensure you capture everything you need.

With technology advancing rapidly, accessing the tools necessary for filmmaking has never been easier.

Which iPhone is Best for Filmmaking?

When choosing an iPhone for filmmaking, the latest model is usually the best bet. If your budget allows, opt for the Pro version. While storage is important, you don’t need to splurge—125 GB is generally sufficient if you regularly transfer your footage to a computer or external storage.

Essential Gear for iPhone Filmmaking

Here’s a basic checklist of the gear you’ll need to complete a film of any length:

  • A smartphone (any kind).

  • A tripod (gorillapod, monopod, or a traditional tripod).

  • A tripod mount.

  • A gimbal like the DJI OM5, if you plan on capturing a lot of moving shots. Remember, a gimbal isn’t a replacement for a tripod—it’s an addition for specific scenarios.

  • A computer with at least 8GB RAM for editing.

  • Editing software.

  • An external hard drive for backups (always keep at least two copies of your footage).

  • A digital data transfer method to move footage from your phone to your computer and external drives.

  • An audio recording kit—audio is a crucial aspect of filmmaking, so invest wisely in this area.

Chances are, you already own most of the items you need to start making films with your iPhone!

Additional Filmmaking Gear and Accessories

As you progress, you might want to consider adding the following accessories to your filmmaking kit:

  • Cage: A mobile cage can help with handheld shots or mounting a microphone or small light. SmallRig offers a solid option for $40, or Ulanzi has a budget-friendly version for $20.

  • Lens: The Moment 58mm telephoto lens is great for tighter shots without sacrificing resolution. It’s especially useful if you don’t have the latest iPhone with built-in lenses.

  • Microphone: The Shure MV88 ($150) or Rode Video Mic Me-L ($110) are excellent choices for improving audio quality when recording directly into your phone. Remember, the microphone needs to be close to your subject for the best results.

  • Lav Mic: For a budget-friendly lavalier mic, the Pixel lav mic ($40) works well. For higher quality, consider the Rode Wireless Go ($200) or the Saramonic Digital Lav ($88).

  • External Recorder: If you’re ready to go pro with your audio, consider using an external recorder like the Zoom H4, H5, or H6, priced between $200-$500.

Planning Your Audio Setup for iPhone Filmmaking

Audio is often overlooked in filmmaking, but it’s just as important as the visuals. When starting out, you can use an old phone as a recording device, but as you take on more complex projects, you’ll need to invest in a proper audio setup. Make sure you purchase gear that you’ll use for the majority of your shoots.

Should You Invest in an Additional Lens for Your iPhone?

If you have one of the latest iPhones with three lenses, you might not need an additional lens. However, for older models, a portrait lens like the Moment 58mm telephoto lens can help you achieve close-ups and medium shots without resorting to digital zoom, which can degrade image quality.

iPhone Filmmaking Basics

Why shoot with a smartphone? Simply put, it’s cost-effective, lightweight, and highly portable. For personal projects or content creation, it’s an excellent choice. However, if you plan to charge for your work, you might need to upgrade to a more professional setup.

What to Watch Out For When Filmmaking with an iPhone

  • Contrast: Avoid high-contrast lighting conditions that your phone’s camera might struggle to handle.

  • Low Light: When filming indoors, try to stay near windows for natural light.

  • Noisy Audio: Don’t underestimate the importance of high-quality audio. Start with silent films, and gradually introduce audio as you develop your skills.

  • Editing: The cut is the most crucial aspect of crafting a film. Start practicing your editing skills today!

  • Computer Requirements: A computer with 8GB RAM should be sufficient for 1080p editing. For 4k editing, consider 16GB RAM and a Solid State Drive (SSD) if possible.

  • Storytelling: Focus on honing your storytelling skills—gear is important, but it’s the story that truly captivates an audience.
